The antimonite, also known as antimony or stibnite, is a mineral belonging to group II (sulfides), according to the classification of Strunz. It is the primary ore of antimony, a relatively rare metal (0.2 per million on Earth's crust). Stibnite appears as massive, flaky masses and often as prism-shaped crystals, whose development can range from microscopic capillary crystals to multi-decimeter-length prisms. It has a low melting point, making it easily melt with any flame. It has perfect cleavage according to a single plane. Stibnite is associated with other sulfides in hydrothermal deposits, with quartz or calcite. The majority of annual production comes from China, where large crystal specimens also originate.
