As Frontline Healthcare Workers Intubating Covid-19 Patients, We Recognize the High-Risk Nature of This Procedure. Intubation is One of Few Circumstances Where Covid-19 is Transmitted via Aerosols Rather Than Droplet Spread. This Makes Intubation a Hazardous Medical Procedure for HCW. Full PPE Is Essential in This Scenario. We Need N95 Masks, Goggles, Visors, and Fully Clad Gowns. Unfortunately, We Cannot Afford Hazmat Suits Like Those Used in the USA and Europe. Some Hospitals Have Already Run Out of N95s, While Others Are Worried About Excessive Usage. Many Doctors Have Purchased 3M Respirators to Ensure Their Own Safety. For Doctors Intubating Patients, 3M Respirators Seem to Be the International Norm for Countries That Cannot Afford PAPRs. The 3M Respirators Can Come with P3 Filters, Which Are Effectively N99 Masks. Unfortunately, Encapsulated Filters (6035/6038) Are No Longer Available in South Africa. The Remaining Exposed Filters (2138) Are Very Prone to Contamination and Must Be Reused Regularly. I Have Been Involved with a Team That Designed and Printed Filter Covers for These Respirators. They Have Been Fully Tested at Groote Schuur Hospital, and the Covid-19 Airway Team Approves of Them. This Allows Our Filters to Stay Cleaner, and the Covers Can Be Sterilized/Washed Between Uses. Other Hospitals Are Requesting Filter Covers for Their 3M Respirators. We Currently Only Have One Printer (Johan Wiid) Printing These Covers. It's Time to Share the Load and Make the Design Available for Everyone. Comments and Feedback Welcome.
