2022 Handy Handsfree Mount (for Bed/Sofa)
cults3d
After several revisions of my Handy handsfree mount, this is the latest refinement. It replaces the bottle holder type top piece and replaces it with a ring clamp. This allows the Handy to rest directly against the stomach. The base has been replaced with a V-shaped base that uses a lot less material but is equally stable and more comfortable. I've included a one-piece version for larger print beds, as well as a three-piece version for smaller printers like the Ender 3. The latter version includes 6mm dowel holes. I'm including some 3d-printed dowels that are 5.75mm x 40mm long. (A little smaller than 6mm to allow space for super glue or epoxy or whatever you decide to use. You might want to test print one dowel to see what your printer's tolerances are and scale up or down accordingly.) Or you can use wooden dowels, which is what I used. I found a dowel at the local hardware store that was about 1/4" (6.3mm) in diameter and had to whittle it down to the right fit. Required hardware: M5 bolt and wingnut for securing the handy into the clamp. M4 bolts for securing the PVC pipe to the printed pieces. Two straight pieces of 3/4” PVC pipe and a right angle elbow. One piece is 7.5 inches and the other is 14.25 inches, but you’ll want to size yours to your own comfort fit. I currently do not have the PVC glued together, as it seems secure, though in previous versions I did glue the elbow to the straight pieces. The bolt in the base is an M5x60mm. But use a 65mm if you want to put a nut on it. I don’t use a nut since it’s downward angle keeps it from sliding out. The bolt that hooks the clamp to the PVC is an M4x40mm. The clamp bolt is an M5x30mm. Also included are hirth joints to make an adjustable mount. Print two of each part. One side holds the hex head of the bolt so it can be tighted without tools. The other side is for a wingnut for easy adjustment on the fly without having to go grab a wrench. Designed for an M6x35mm hex bolt and an M6 wingnut (with a washer). The joints are superglued into the PVC. The pvc pieces are 2.75 inches, 6.75 inches, and 7 inches, but you'll want to size to your preference. Someone also requested a V-base with shorter arms that will fit on smaller print beds (220mm x 220mm). I tried a shorter one on a previous version of this and didn't think it was stable enough, but nevertheless here it is in case anyone wants it. UPDATE 1.28.2023: HEAVY DUTY HIRTH JOINTS. These are double-walled where they connect to the PVC for a stronger joint. I print these new heavy duty joints with 4 walls and 100% infill. UPDATE 7.25.2022: CLAMP for STANLEY VICE Based on a request from Storm_Rider_1, I've remixed the clamp to make it so it will more reliably connect to a vice. He had been clamping onto the pvc connector and wanted something more secure for the vice. This should be printed either solid (100% infill) or with 4 or 5 walls, so it will be very strong. Personally, I'd rather print it solid and not risk it breaking. There are three versions for different orientations of the Handy's buttons.
