2020 Spool Holder for CR-10
thingiverse
A versatile spool holder designed for seamless integration with 2020, 2040, 2060, and other similar aluminum extrusions featuring a 20mm profile. The sleek arm effortlessly fits over and into the extrusion, while the retention plate secures it from the other side, creating a sturdy sandwich-like structure. For optimal results, use M5 screws and nuts of appropriate lengths, with minimum requirements of 1.2 mm for 2020, 3.2 mm for 2040, and so on. For the axle, I utilized a wooden dowel, approximately 7.8mm in diameter, wrapped with duct tape to achieve the desired thickness. An 8mm bearing is then attached, allowing the spool to roll smoothly. Feel free to experiment with alternative materials as long as they provide sufficient support for your spool. Notable updates include an improved design that eliminates the need for a plate, instead utilizing T-nuts and M5 bolts to securely connect to the extrusion. This innovative approach is ideal when space constraints are a concern. Additionally, a restrictor piece can be used to gently limit the movement of the spool, preventing spontaneous unwinding. **Print Settings:** * Printer: CR-10 * Rafts: No * Supports: No * Resolution: 0.2mm * Infill: 20% **Important Notes:** The STL files are designed with optimal print bed alignment in mind. To achieve the best results, ensure that the objects lie flat on the bed during printing. You will need to print two sets of each part for a complete holder; consider printing one set at a time to allow for adjustments if necessary. **Post-Printing Instructions:** Secure the parts together using 4 screws and nuts. It is normal for some resistance in the center tooth, but an uneven fit due to tight outside legs is not typical. If this occurs, try increasing the print size by 1% and retrying. **Design Rationale:** I created this spool holder as a solution to address issues with tension and filament extrusion when using the Volcano Direct Mount for the CR-10 printer. After experimenting with various top-mounted spools, I decided to design my own, prioritizing rigidity, lightness, and secure clamping onto aluminum extrusions. The open top design facilitates easy axle placement and removal.
