
2017 Eclipse Pinhole Projector

I was thrilled to see NASA come up with some awesome state-based 3D printable Pinhole Projectors for the upcoming eclipse. As a Canadian, I wanted something a bit more unique. NASA, where's the love for Canada? We built that amazing arm for your shuttle. This is just a simple block of plastic with a 5mm hole drilled in the middle, but it was so much fun to 3D print one and try my first filament switch for two-color printing. To switch colors, pause the print at Layer 22 (it'll be different on your G-code) if you want to change up the text and leaf designs. Check out my sample photo - my filament switch didn't quite work out, and I ended up with a messy two-color job in 2017. I thought pausing the print in Octoprint would move the head out of the way, but it just sat there and melted the two colors together. I'll have to try another one of these later to see if I can get the color switch right. This project took just under two hours to print on my Monoprice/Wanhao D6. NASA's website inspired me with their 2D/3D printable Pinhole Projectors: https://eclipse2017.nasa.gov/2d3d-printable-pinhole-projectors I used the Maple Leaf design from Tinkercad: https://www.tinkercad.com/things/az1E0C8J47g-maple-leaf NASA suggests using this projector about 1M (three to four feet) away from the ground to project onto the ground. Be safe, kids - ask a grown-up for help!
