The plus sign in its name was added to enable registration of the brand, since the common German word Teamgeist, meaning "team spirit", could not be registered. The ball was designed by Molten Corporation and manufactured by Adidas, which has provided balls used in all matches of the FIFA World Cup since 1970 when it introduced the famous Telstar. The Teamgeist ball differs from previous 32-faced balls having only 14 curved faces, making the ball topologically equivalent to a truncated octahedron. The 32-faced ball had been the standard since 1970.
