I designed this object using Tinkercad. https://www.tinkercad.com/things/6ixIYuTw4cS As an Environmental Science teacher, I wanted to create a planter for the Design Contest that showcases my passion for Aquaponics and Upcycling. This design can be printed as a set or just the cup, which can be fitted into a 2-liter soda bottle with the top cut off. If you print the whole thing, the vase part has a pre-drilled 1/4-inch hole for an airline tube to create circulation. If you only print the cup, you'll need to drill or melt a 1/4-inch hole in the bottom inch of the side of your bottle to run the airline through. An airstone is not necessary but will produce more bubbles and better plant growth by increasing oxygen levels in the water. This setup causes air bubbles to pop and splash the roots of your plant, promoting healthy growth. As bubbles rise through the water column, it circulates and creates a small amount of flow in the container, which fish appreciate. It also helps particulate matter rise through the water, sticking to the roots and growing media, where bacteria can access food to create nitrates for plants. You can use this system for Deep Water Culture Hydroponics or Aeroponics by swapping out the fish with appropriate chemicals and water depth. If you're using it as an Aquaponics system, be sure to regularly clean out solid waste and perform water changes like any aquarium.
