This is my very first 3D model created with Inkscape. As a 2D tool, Inkscape simply can't produce real 3D objects on its own. With the assistance of an extension, we can assign height values to individual objects. Check out http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:25036 for the original extension by Dan Newman. Also take a look at https://github.com/fablabnbg/inkscape-paths2openscad/releases for an updated version that integrates a streamlined 3D printing workflow via OpenSCAD and Cura directly with Inkscape. You'll find Python sources and a DEB package there.
