1VTL: TATA-binding protein interaction with DNA
sketchfab
This model shows off chains A, B, and E of 1VTL; TBP is attached to a twisted ladder of DNA. In eukaryotic promoter areas, you'll find TBP roughly 30bp upstream from the transcription start point. It's a protein with a saddle shape that connects with DNA during transcription kick-off as part of the bigger transcription factor TFIID. The connection takes place at a TATA-box in the minor groove of DNA, sparking a change in shape which makes it simpler for RNA pol II (and also RNA pol I and pol III) to start transcribing genes.
