Painting a textured effect by hand requires some skill and patience. Begin by preparing your surface - this could be paper, canvas, or even fabric. If you're using a new sheet of paper, it's best to prime it with a coat of gesso first. This will create a smooth base for your painting. To achieve the desired texture, you'll need to use some tools that can scratch and scrape at your paint. A palette knife is perfect for this job - simply load up the blade with some paint and start applying it to your surface in thick, sweeping strokes. The more pressure you apply, the thicker the layer of paint will be. You can also use household items like credit cards or old CD's to create different textures. Simply drag these across your painted area to create interesting patterns and effects. Experiment with different techniques to see what works best for you.
