Human: History of the 1964-1968 Porsche 911 For seventeen years, Porsche produced just one road car - the iconic 356. While customers could customize their vehicle's body style, colors and engine options, the 356 remained its core model. By the early 1960s, this stalwart design was showing its age, with the pushrod four-cylinder engine nearing the end of its development cycle. Porsche responded by developing a revolutionary new GT car under internal type number 901. This game-changing vehicle built upon the successful formula of the 356 while offering improved visibility, increased shoulder room and an innovative overhead cam 2.0-liter flat-six motor that delivered about 40 more horsepower than its predecessor, the 356 Super. Early models featured charming vintage touches reminiscent of their 356 counterparts, including chrome trim both inside and out. However, they also inherited some of the 356's notorious flaws, such as a susceptibility to rust and a tail-happy tendency due to increased power output and relatively thin 165-15 tires. This trait reached its peak with the introduction of the 911S in 1966, boasting an impressive 160 horsepower but struggling with traction on its tiny tire contact patch. In response to these challenges, Porsche made significant improvements for the 1968 model year, ultimately discontinuing the 911S in the US market before reintroducing it in 1969 with a critical update: mechanical fuel injection.
