For nearly two decades, Porsche built just one road car - the 356. You could customize it with various body styles, colors, and engines, but that was it. By the early 1960s, the 356 had become outdated, and its pushrod four-cylinder engine was nearing the end of its development life. The complex 356 Carrera 2 four-cam two-liter four-cylinder was not a viable solution for mass production. Under the internal designation 901, Porsche developed an all-new GT car that built upon the 356's design but offered better visibility, more shoulder room, and a powerful overhead cam 2.0-liter flat six-cylinder engine with approximately 40 extra horsepower than its predecessor, the 356 Super. Early 911s retained much of the vintage charm found in the 356, including chrome trim both inside and out. Unfortunately, they also shared the 356's propensity for rusting at an alarming rate and exhibited a more pronounced tail-happy tendency due to increased power and narrower 165-15 tires. This trait reached its peak with the introduction of the 911S in 1966. With its 160 horsepower output and tiny tire contact patch, the early S model proved to be quite challenging to handle. It was eventually discontinued in the US for the 1968 model year but returned in 1969 with mechanical fuel injection.
