The Evolution of Porsche's Road Cars: A Look at the 1964-1968 911 Porsche built just one road car for seventeen years, and that was the 356. While you could customize it with different body styles, colors, and a few engines, the 356 remained the sole model throughout its lifespan. By the early 1960s, the pushrod four-cylinder engine had reached the end of its development cycle, making it an outdated choice for mass production. In response to this challenge, Porsche developed a brand-new GT car under the internal type number 901. This revolutionary vehicle was designed to be evolutionary in nature, drawing from the same DNA as the 356 while incorporating significant improvements such as enhanced visibility and more shoulder room. The engine of the early 911s boasted an overhead cam 2.0-liter flat-six cylinder motor with approximately 40 additional horsepower compared to its predecessor, the 356 Super. Early models of the 911 retained much of the vintage charm that defined the 356, featuring chrome trim both inside and out. Unfortunately, they also shared a similar susceptibility to rust and were more prone to oversteering due to their increased power output and narrow 165-15 tires. The tendency for early S models to become unpredictable reached its peak with the introduction of the 911S in 1966. With 160 horsepower and an already limited tire contact patch, these cars could be a handful to handle. This led to their eventual withdrawal from the US market at the end of the 1968 model year before they returned in 1969 with mechanical fuel injection.
