The Porsche 911's History from 1964-1968\n\nFor seventeen years, Porsche produced just one road car: the 356. Owners could customize it with various body styles, colors and a few engines, but the 356 remained its only model. By the early sixties, however, this car was becoming outdated and its pushrod four-cylinder engine had reached the end of its development cycle. The complex, two-liter four-cylinder 356 Carrera 2 with a four-cam design proved unsuitable for mass production.\n\nUnder internal type number 901, Porsche created an entirely new GT car that combined the 356's evolutionary design with improved visibility and more shoulder room. This revolutionary roadster boasted an overhead cam 2.0-liter flat six-cylinder engine, producing approximately forty horsepower more than a 356 Super. Early 911s retained much of the vintage charm associated with the 356, including chrome trim both inside and out. Like its predecessor, however, early 911 models rusted at an alarming rate and exhibited a tendency to become tail-happy due to increased power and narrow tires, measuring 165-15. This issue reached its peak with the introduction of the 1966 911S, which boasted 160 horsepower and a minuscule tire contact patch, making it extremely difficult to handle. The 911S was eventually discontinued in the US for the 1968 model year but returned in 1969, now equipped with mechanical fuel injection.
