Human: History of the 1964-1968 Porsche 911\n\nFor seventeen years, Porsche produced just one road car - the 356. Various body styles, colors and engines were available, but that was it. By the early 1960s, the 356 had become outdated and its pushrod four-cylinder engine was nearing the end of its development life. The 356 Carrera 2's complicated four-cam two-liter four-cylinder engine offered no solution for mass-production.\n\nUnder type number 901, Porsche developed a new GT car that built on the 356 but with better visibility and more shoulder room. It featured an overhead cam 2.0 liter flat six-cylinder motor producing about 40 more horsepower than a 356 Super. Early 911s retained much of the vintage charm of a 356, including chrome trim inside and out. They also shared the 356's tendency to rust with equal rapidity and were more prone to tail-happiness due to increased power and narrow tires. This trait reached its peak in the 1966 911S. With 160 horsepower and minimal tire contact, the early S was a handful. It disappeared from US markets for the 1968 model year before returning in 1969 with mechanical fuel injection.
