History of the 1964-1968 Porsche 911 For seventeen years, Porsche built just one road car: the iconic 356. You could customize your 356 with different body styles, colors, and engines, but that was it. By the early 1960s, the 356 had become outdated, and its pushrod four-cylinder engine was at the end of its development life. The complicated and ultimately unsuccessful 356 Carrera 2 four-cam two-liter four-cylinder was no solution for mass production. Under internal type number 901, Porsche developed a revolutionary new GT car that built upon the 356's strengths while introducing major improvements in visibility, shoulder room, and power. A brand-new overhead cam 2.0 liter flat six-cylinder motor delivered about 40 more horsepower than the 356 Super, making it a game-changer on the road. Early 911s retained much of the vintage charm of their predecessors, including chrome trim inside and out, but they also inherited the same rust-prone nature as the 356. Additionally, with increased power and skinny 165-15 tires, early 911s were more prone to tail-happiness. This tendency reached its peak with the introduction of the 911S in 1966, which boasted 160hp and a remarkably small tire contact patch, making it a handful to handle. The 911S disappeared from US markets for good after the 1968 model year but returned in 1969 with the added benefit of mechanical fuel injection.
