The legendary Nieuport 17 blazed across the skies of World War I, forging its reputation as one of history's greatest fighter aircraft. By March 1916, French forces welcomed this behemoth onto their front lines, where it rapidly gained notoriety due to its clear superiority over all other British-designed planes available at the time. International attention was drawn, and Nieuport 17s also saw action with the Netherlands, Belgium, Russia, and Italy's air services. Such success didn't go unnoticed, as Germany sought inspiration from its exceptional features, coaxing local manufacturers into emulating its prowess. An astonishing total of six Royal Flying Corps squadrons and eight Royal Naval Air Service squadrons chose to rely on the unmatched capabilities of the Nieuport 17. Although critics pointed out a few major design flaws - notably its tendency for the lower wing to break free in extreme high-speed dives, leading to a somewhat erratic flight profile, some daredevil pilots didn't let that stand in their way. They took an even more extraordinary shine to the aircraft that earned its place at the side of some world-famous Allied flying stars - not least, British-born, Canada-raised air ace William Avery Bishop ("Billy" to friends and foes alike). In a showstopping testament to bravery under pressure, Billy "took down enemy after enemy with a veritable precision you wouldn't wish for any rival pilot".
