At 2 p.m. on May 12th, two Ninth Corps brigades launched a bold assault against the Confederate fortifications just one-quarter mile southeast of this location. The 17th Michigan Infantry Regiment took up its position at the far left of the Federal line. As it closed in on its objective, Brigadier General James Lane's North Carolina Brigade suddenly emerged from the dense woods and struck the 17th Michigan with a fierce blow, catching them off guard in the intense hand-to-hand combat that ensued. In this desperate fight, the 17th Michigan suffered heavy losses, losing its national flag and 189 out of its original 225 soldiers who had charged into battle. Three courageous soldiers later received the Medal of Honor for their brave but ultimately unsuccessful attempts to recover the lost colors. This 3D model was created using photogrammetry software, specifically version 4.530 of 3DF Zephyr, which processed 44 images taken from different angles. The marker is situated near Spotsylvania, Virginia, in Spotsylvania County, and can be found on Burnside Drive, directly to the right when traveling east. It is located close to tour stop seven (Heth's Salient) on the driving tour of the Spotsylvania Battlefield unit within the Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park.
