1619: The will to survive

Four centuries ago, on the shores of Luanda in Angola, the San Juan Bautista set sail with 350 enslaved Africans, brutally shackled head to foot, aboard its cargo hold. The perilous five-month journey across the Atlantic marked the devastating starting point of America's original sin: slavery. Twenty to thirty enslaved Africans landed on the Virginia colony's shores in August 1619. USA TODAY has created an immersive augmented reality experience that vividly recreates what those captives would have first seen and endured as they were forcibly boarded onto the ship. This experience is now available on your phone, part of a special USA TODAY project called "1619: Searching for Answers." The complete interactive story, "1619: The Will to Survive," can be found within the Augmented Reality section of the USA TODAY app.
