The Desert Rose is a sedimentary evaporitic rock formed in deserts; it associates with strongly evaporitic environments rich in sulfate waters. This water disperses in the sandy/lutitic sediment, evaporates and precipitates gypsum in numerous crystals that intersect and grow between them. Its main deposits have been registered in Algeria (Sahara Desert), Tunisia, Spain (Fuerteventura, Canary Islands; Canet de Mar, Catalonia; La Almarcha, Cuenca), in the USA (Cochise, Arizona), in Mexico, Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua in the Samalayuca Desert and in Chile (Atacama Desert).
