This is essential to keep mains voltage safe from insects and humans. The cover isn't waterproof itself, but it can be made so by applying hot glue around its edges. Painting it with a durable finish will provide extra protection. Although the PSU may only be splash-resistant, taking precautions is always wise. I own the 120W version, but I assume all other models are similar in design and function.
