Cthulhu (/kəˈtuːluː/) is a fictional cosmic entity that writer H. P. Lovecraft created in 1928 for his short story "The Call of Cthulhu," which was published in the American pulp magazine Weird Tales. As one of the Great Old Ones within the pantheon of Lovecraftian cosmic entities, Cthulhu has been featured in numerous popular culture references since its introduction. H. P. Lovecraft describes Cthulhu as a massive entity that is worshipped by cultists. When describing its appearance, Lovecraft portrays it as a combination of an octopus, a dragon, and a caricatured human form. The name "Cthulhu" was given to the Lovecraft-inspired universe where Cthulhu and its fellow entities reside, known as the Cthulhu Mythos.
