111 South Wacker Drive in Chicago, Illinois
myminifactory
111 South Wacker Drive stands as a prominent office tower in Chicago. Completed in 2005 at an impressive height of 681 feet, this 51-story blue-glass structure ranks among the city's tallest buildings. Situated on the site where the U.S. Gypsum Building once stood, this new skyscraper has taken its place as one of the most notable structures in the city. Designed by Lohan Caprille Goettsch Architects, it boasts a unique parking ramp that sets it apart from other buildings. The circular design of the ramp creates a striking sloped ceiling for the main lobby below, while its corkscrew pattern is reflected in the pavement outside. Furthermore, this building has been recognized for its commitment to sustainability, earning the distinction of being the first-ever project certified LEED-CS Gold by the U.S. Green Building Council. The original plan envisioned an even more extreme structure - a 35-story tower standing at 638 feet tall, utilizing many of the existing caissons from the former U.S. Gypsum Building. A massive 120-foot base would have supported the building, connected to the office structure by 20 large diagonal braces. This design would have resulted in a nearly symmetrical shape and a building that appeared precarious. The minimalist lobby was intended to be enclosed in glass, leaving space for an exterior plaza featuring artwork. However, this plan was eventually abandoned in favor of the current design.
