USS SC-497, a versatile submarine chaser, played key roles for both the United States Navy and the Free French Navy during World War II. Originally built as PC-497 by Westergard Boat Works in Rockport, Texas, she was launched on July 4, 1941, and commissioned as USS PC-497 on October 16, 1942. Later reclassified as a SC-497 class submarine chaser, her designation changed to reflect this new status. As part of the Lend-Lease program, she was transferred to the Free French Navy on March 18, 1944, and became CH-96. This transfer became permanent on August 15, 1944. In 1952, she was renamed CH-724 and later P-724 before being decommissioned on October 23, 1980.
