Proposed by the Queen herself and penned by Louis XVI, the Brunswick Manifesto 104, crafted in Koblenz on July 25, 1792, arrives in Paris on August 1; this inflammatory text promises the Parisians "a bloody military reckoning and total upheaval" if they so much as breathe a violent thought against the royal family. No longer can the patriots be left in any doubt about the king's treachery. With an uncharacteristic clumsiness, this document, far from striking fear into the hearts of the sans-culottes, instead sets the Parisian sections ablaze while providing them with the perfect excuse to revive the Revolution and bring down the monarchy 105.
