Compound planetary gears with an 11:1 ratio are used to achieve ten full turns from a standard single turn potentiometer. To assemble this mechanism, precise control over printer clearances is necessary. The smaller hole should bind securely onto the knurled shaft while the larger hole of the removable gear allows for tight threading onto the mounting shaft of the potentiometer. A helpful tip for assembly is to start threading the potentiometer in its assembled position and then heat it with boiled water to facilitate continued threading. As you advance the dial, rewind the pot by taking turns, allowing the hot shaft to cut a thread easily and melt into place.
