I recently stumbled upon an old 1950s Hornby tin plate engine at a charity shop, and the price was too good to pass up. It brought back vivid memories of the engine my older siblings had handed down to me years ago and the countless hours I spent restoring it, meticulously oiling the motion, quartering the wheels, and re-pinning the broken spring. As a kid, I used to fix other kids' trains by freeing them from their seized states with a few drops of oil. Occasionally, I was asked to remove tank engines' back panels for better access to the cab or loosen the tags holding the smoke box door in place to inspect the boiler inside. Given my experience, it came as no surprise that this engine was missing its back panel and maybe even karma had a hand in it. Now, I'm torn between waiting for an affordable body to appear on eBay to cannibalize or designing my own for 3D printing. As part of my ongoing restoration project, I've taken on the challenge of replacing wagon wheels and entire tenders. I've compiled a series of prints that will gradually be added to over time, transforming this old engine into something truly remarkable.
