They were discovered by githyanki raiding parties and since then they have formed an alliance with them, especially with githyanki headhunters and knights, who use them as mounts, relying upon star lancer's innate ability to turn both themselves and their riders invisible to better hunt githyanki's preffered prey - mind flayers.
