This project utilized massive amounts of steel and manual labor, and later became a significant purchaser of coal. This president was assassinated by a gunshot to the back of his head. Significance and Research The Object: A Railroad Spike Details about the Object: The object is the final railroad spike to be laid into the Transpacific Union Railroad system. The 16th president of the United States of America, held it for a photograph before it was laid. President: Abraham Lincoln, in office from: 1861 – 1865, Republican Presidential Role & Contribution Chief Legislator The political action was the Transpacific Union Railroad Act which provided government funding to the Union Pacific railroad company to build a continental railroad system. Impact on America/ Significance The Union Railroad had significant importance because it provided relatively fast transportation for the average person to get from one side of the country to the other. This also allowed people to sell goods and transport goods to the other side of the country, which would enable places throughout the country to prosper due to their increase in available goods and they could rely more on more developed areas.
