$1 Pocket Microscope
thingiverse
This 3D printable pocket microscope can magnify objects up to 140 times its original size using parts that cost around one dollar. Detailed instructions for assembly are available at https://www.instructables.com/id/The-1-Pocket-Microscope-Explore-the-World-Around-Y/. To build the microscope, you will need two glass bearing balls with diameters of 1/4" and 3/32". A single 1" 4-40 screw is also required. For holding a glass slide in place, use two jumbo paper clips. Illumination is provided by a CR2032 coin cell battery and a white LED. Use the screw to create the hinge. Insert the glass balls into their respective holes. Put the battery into the pocket and carefully insert the LED legs into the pocket as well, noting the direction to prevent shorts. Place clear tape on both sides of the specimen and hold it in place using the paper clips that slide into rectangular holes at the microscope's bottom piece. Move the top piece up and down to focus. Look through the glass and see the microscopic world come alive!
