The Italian lira's fundamental unit was represented by the 1 Lira Cornucopia (1954). This coin, along with others featuring 50 centesimi, and 2 and 5 lire, was first minted in 1861. Initially made of 900‰ silver, they were later changed to 835‰ silver starting from 1863. After World War I, the 1 Lira Cornucopia was minted in nickel from 1921 to 1938 with a diameter of 26.5 mm and a weight of 8 grams. In 1939, it was cast in Italian Monetary Steel (acmonital) with the same weight but a diameter of 26.7 millimeters. Following the monarchy's collapse, coins featuring one lira were minted using Italma (a magnesium-aluminum alloy) from 1946 to 1950, measuring 21.6 mm and weighing 1.25 grams. Later, from 1951 to 1959, they measured 17.2 mm and weighed 0.625 grams.
