1 in Schedule 40 PVC piston
thingiverse
This is my test piston I created for a 1-inch schedule 40 PVC pipe. I machined and spliced two 3/16 inch O-rings with cut lengths of 70mm, then threaded it onto a 1/4-20 threaded rod. Testing revealed no leaks after leaving the setup submerged in approximately 10 inches of water for about 24 hours; overall, I'm quite pleased with its performance so far. Applying a small amount of oil significantly reduces the force needed to move the piston - approximately 2 pounds will suffice. Assuming adequate clearance, it's conceivable that this design could handle shop air pressure (up to 120 psi), although this has yet to be verified.
