VICTORIAN RAILWAY LOCOMOTIVE COMING SOON The V 56 was specifically designed to power suburban trains through a major washdock facility. Built in 1959 at the Newport Workshops, this locomotive was powered by a robust tractor engine. For smooth operation, buffers and autocouplers were expertly fitted, allowing it to effortlessly couple up with either screw coupled or autocoupled stock. This versatility was particularly useful for coupling with Harris trains, Hitachi trains, as well as newer Comeng trains that emerged in 1981. To accommodate the Comeng trains, a specialized coupler adapter was required, which transformed the Comeng's multi-function coupler into a fixed jaw autocoupler. During its operations within the washdock plant, the V 56 typically moved at a speed of about one kilometer per hour. However, other movements were carried out at speeds ranging from three to five kilometers per hour, with the locomotive's maximum rated speed reaching up to sixteen kilometers per hour.
