I've been working with my Shapeoko2, a 12"x12" CNC machine running GRBL 0.8 and NEMA 17 motors, equipped with a quiet cut spindle. I'm using a single-fluted up-cut bit of 1/8 inch diameter, which works great for precision cuts. To create this case, I employed Google Sketchup, along with the Sketchucam plugin to generate tool paths - it's incredibly easy to use. After exploring various CNC software options, I highly recommend Sketchucam as a free alternative for creating parts on your Shapeoko or X Carve machines. This program eliminates the need to work with SVG files, which are perfect for vinyl cutting and engraving but can be cumbersome when crafting precise parts quickly. For image engraving tasks, I rely on InkScape and Makercam. With my Shapeoko machine, I've been experimenting for about a year now - the most challenging aspect has been grasping G-code programming and understanding how to optimize its usage. If you're using a similar setup, feel free to download the provided G-code files set to 00 and top of your 1/4 inch plywood; simply press Cut, and it should yield good results for you.
