1/48 scale X-15 Aircraft Model

The X-15 rocket plane was used extensively by NASA and the US Air Force for conducting cutting-edge supersonic and hypersonic research in the 1950s. All sections can be printed with a single perimeter, and zero infill to achieve a remarkably lightweight model. The rear section features strategically designed supports that are engineered to break away when necessary. Printing everything in the recommended orientation ensures that no additional support is needed. The rear and middle sections connect seamlessly via twist-lock technology. A specially designed display stand can be found at https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:198954. To assemble the stand, simply glue the adapter into the slot on the bottom of the model, then attach it to the stand using a strong adhesive. One impressive example of this model's capabilities was achieved by printing it in 3D MARS White PLA, followed by a meticulous process of sanding and painting with white Kylon primer and paint. After a second round of sanding, vinyl lettering was applied before being removed after spray-painting the entire model flat black using Krylon. Finally, a topcoat of Krylon Satin Clearcoat was applied for a stunning finish. The stand, on the other hand, was printed in Proto-Pasta Galactic Empire Metallic Purple PLA. A second example showcased the versatility of this design by being printed in Solutech Black PLA. Chris Taylor offers a brief but informative look at one of these models printed using an Elegoo Mars resin printer in a video available at https://youtu.be/pRB0eTzCicE?t=581.
