1/32 Dirt Late Model Slot Car (body and chassis)
thingiverse
I designed a 1/32 slot car racing body and chassis from scratch using Autodesk Inventor and Fusion 360 to see if I could create something functional. The result exceeded my expectations, so I'm sharing it here and on homeracingworld.us. I started with dimensions from a Craftsman Late Model Series rulebook found online, but the final design isn't strictly to the rules - it's close enough to true 1/32 scale. The body and chassis were designed together for a seamless fit. The chassis uses a standard slot.it inline motor pod. Printing the body in multiple pieces and gluing them together produced the best results, using hot melt glue with excellent outcomes so far. There are two versions of the design: 2 post and 3 post. The 3 post body has mounting posts in the front and rear, with printing preference dependent on desired location. Make sure to print matching body/chassis for optimal results. I print everything in PLA, which works well. The chassis and body appear durable enough to last a long time. Printing settings: Body: Print upside down (large flat area against build plate) Supports: from build plate only Infill: 100% Layer Height: 0.2 Walls: 3 Interior: Print right side up. I modified my g-code for a color change at the point the roll cage starts printing. Supports: none (roll cage will be stringy, but too thin to use supports) Infill: 100% Layer Height: 0.2 Walls: 3 Bumper: Print upside down (ends of 'tubes' against build plate). Be cautious when removing supports as tubes can easily snap. Supports: from build plate only Infill: 100% Layer Height: 0.2 Walls: 3 Hood: Print right side up Supports: none Infill: 100% Layer Height: 0.2 Walls: 3 Air Cleaner: Print right side up. I use a marker to color the top surface black to resemble a lid. Supports: none Infill: doesn't matter Layer Height: 0.2 Walls: 2 Top: Print upside down Supports: from build plate only Infill: 100% Layer Height: 0.2 Walls: 3 Spoiler: The hardest part to print due to its delicacy. I tried various orientations and settled on printing it vertically, which takes the longest but produces a nice-looking part. Supports: everywhere Infill: 100% Layer Height: 0.2 Walls: 3 Chassis: Print right side up Supports: ?? I usually print with supports, but they may not be necessary except under the guide area. Infill: 100% Layer Height: 0.2 Walls: 3
