I recently stumbled upon an old 1950s Hornby tin plate engine in a charity shop, and the price was too good to pass up. The sight of it instantly transported me back to my childhood, when I inherited an engine from my elder siblings that I spent countless hours restoring. I recall meticulously oiling the motion, quartering the wheels, and re-pinning the broken spring. Back then, I used to repair other kids' trains, often requiring me to free up seized engines by oiling them. Occasionally, I was asked to remove tank engine backs for better access to the cab or loosen the tags holding the smoke box door in place to reach the boiler inside. It's no surprise that this particular engine was missing some parts, and maybe fate had a hand in it. Now, I'm faced with a decision: wait for an affordable body to appear on eBay and cannibalize it or design my own using 3D printing? Here are the results of my ongoing restoration project, which has evolved into replacing wagon wheels and even complete tenders. I've created a series of prints that will be gradually added over time.
