I recently stumbled upon an old 1950s Hornby tin plate engine in a charity shop, for a price that was too good to pass up. Memories came flooding back of the engine I'd inherited from my elder siblings many years ago and my mission to meticulously oil the motion, meticulously quarter the wheels, and replace the broken spring. Back then, I used to help other kids with their trains, which usually meant freeing them from a seized state by lubricating the parts. Occasionally, I was asked to remove the back of tank engines to get better access to the cab or loosen the tags holding the smoke box door in place to reach inside the boiler. No wonder this engine was missing its covers and maybe it's just karma! So, what should I do? Wait for a cheap body to pop up on eBay and cannibalize it or design my own from scratch for 3D-printing? Here are the results of my current restoration project that I've expanded to include tasks like replacing wagon wheels and even complete tenders. I've created a series of prints that I'll gradually add to over time.
