Ancient fragment of a southern mammoth's tusk discovered in the village of Achaluki. With its long curved tusks, the mammoth protected itself from predators, dug up food from under the snow, stripped tree bark, and harvested ice for drinking during the winter months instead of water. The southern mammoth was one of the oldest species of mammoths, living two million years ago. This type had relatively wide side teeth and powerful tusks nearly 4 meters long with a characteristic twisted shape typical of mammoths. The largest specimens reached heights of over four meters. The southern mammoth went extinct about 170,000 years ago.
